Florida Democrat Refusing to Lower Flags to Honor Rush Limbaugh

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, the only statewide elected democrat in Florida, will not follow directive by Governor DeSantis to fly flags at half-staff to honor radio icon Rush Limbaugh.

According to posts on her official accounts Nikki Fried will not lower any flags under her direction. “Lowering to half-staff the flag of the United States of America is a sacred honor that pays respect to fallen heroes and patriots. It is not a partisan political tool,” she said in a Tweet.

The statement went on to say, “Therefore, I will notify all state offices under my direction to disregard the governor's forthcoming order to lower flags for Mr. Limbaugh – because we will not celebrate hate speech, bigotry, and division. Lowering the flag should always reflect unity, not division, and raising our standards, not lowering them. Our flags will remain flying high to celebrate the American values of diversity, inclusion, and respect for all.”

Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Friday that he will order all flags to be flown at half-staff in the state of Florida to honor the radio icon Limbaugh. Rush was a resident of Palm Beach, Florida.

Today Governor DeSantis Tweeted a photo of a flag at half-staff over the Florida State Capitol with the word ‘Rush R.I.P.’

Nikki Fried is viewed as a potential challenger to Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022.

Nikki Fried is currently the only statewide elected democrat in Florida and the first to hold the Agriculture Commissioner since 2001.
