Nearly $1 billion worth of cars sank in the Atlantic Ocean

A ship carrying valuable cars caught on fire and its crew abandoned ship.

Wealthy car buyers are in for some bad news — nearly $1 billion worth of automobiles now sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after a transport ship caught fire and its crew literally jumped ship.

“It's not exactly clear how many cars were on the ship when it went down, but vessels the size of Felicity Ace can carry at least 4,000 vehicles,” KATU 2 ABC reported. “The large cargo vessel went down 250 miles off Portugal's Azores Islands. The ship was on its way to Rhode Island from Germany when a fire broke out 13 days prior to its fiery demise.”

Other estimates have placed the value of cars at closer to $400 million.

“Approximately 4,000 primarily from Volkswagen Group brands, including Porsche and Lamborghini, were onboard and being shipped from Germany to the U.S. when the ship caught fire for still unconfirmed reasons, although some have suspected it may have been caused by a battery in one of the electric vehicles in the shipment,” Fox News reported.

“Several customers had posted to social media that they had been informed their cars were onboard the ship and that their orders would need to be rescheduled for production,” Fox reported.
